English with Jo

Hello friends, I'm Joane (call me Jo!) and I am a certified English teacher. I created this Eventbrite account to help ESL learners improve their English for study reasons, career, travel or personal goals!

I have a BA in English Language and Linguistics, a Masters of Science in International Development and a Cambridge accredited CELTA qualification which certifies me to teach English to speakers of other languages.

I help students at both pre-intermediate (A2) and upper-intermediate levels (B2) consolidate their English skills. In particular, I help students with:

  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Pronunciation
  • Receptive skills (reading and listening)
  • Productive skills (speaking and writing).

Anyone who is keen to improve their English in a fun, friendly and professional environment is welcome to join my weekly Sunday class. Follow me for regular class times and updates - bring your friend, your pet, and your appetite for learning!

For anyone joining us for the first time, here are some frequently asked questions:

1. What happens during class?

We usually start with a brief chat about our week, how we are doing, and make introductions if someone new joins the class. This gives everyone time to settle in, allows latecomers to join, and helps us check in with one another.

We then move on to the main lesson and finish with a language review, where we look at examples of language used during class and improve them together.

2. What is your teaching style?

My teaching style is friendly, interactive, and professional. I follow the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach, which focuses on learners practising and experiencing language as much as possible, while the teacher guides and supports the learning process.

3. How are the lessons conducted?

My lessons begin with a lead-in activity, usually a general discussion that introduces the topic. We then learn new vocabulary that will be useful throughout the lesson, followed by two or three main tasks that gradually increase in difficulty.

Learners have opportunities to work independently as well as in groups using breakout rooms. After each group task, we discuss the activity together as a whole class.

The lesson concludes with a language upgrade activity, where I highlight examples of language used during the lesson and help learners improve them. Corrections may focus on grammar, spelling, vocabulary, meaning, pronunciation, or sentence structure.

4. Are people allowed to ask questions during the lesson?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, I encourage learners to ask questions whenever they need clarification. There is no such thing as a bad question when learning a language.

5. What happens when someone makes a mistake?

Nothing at all. Making mistakes is a natural and important part of learning a language. I encourage learners to feel comfortable taking risks, as mistakes often create valuable learning opportunities.

6. Why are you teaching for free as a qualified ESL teacher?

Teaching is my real passion, and I find it incredibly rewarding to help motivated learners improve their English.

While I currently work in marketing during the week, I continue teaching on weekends because I genuinely enjoy it. It allows me to continue developing my teaching skills, support learners in achieving their goals, and remain connected to a profession that I care deeply about. I also appreciate that not everyone may be able to pay for expensive English lessons so making my lessons accessible to everyone is important.

With Warm Wishes,

Teacher Jo
