CNR-INM

CNR-INM (formerly CNR-INSEAN) conducts theoretical research, experimental tests and numerical simulations, in the disciplines of fluid dynamics, mechanical vibration and naval architecture, with impact on marine technologies for:- security, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of marine transport;- development of means for extracting renewable energy from the sea (offshore wind, currents, waves);- understanding physical phenomena at the ocean-atmosphere interface;- safety during landing of transport aircraft.

In the European scenario, the scientific and technological expertise of CNR-INM find a natural place within the activities envisaged in the Strategic Research Agenda of the European Technology Platform WATERBORNE, and in particular those laid down in the two research pillars: “Safe, Sustainable and Efficient Waterborne Transport” and “A competitive European Waterborne Industry”.

Scientific Expertise

The scientific expertise of CNR-INM include:

- Experimental methods and mathematical models for numerical fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, hydroelasticity, underwater acoustics;- Numerical methods for Simulation Based Design and optimal control;- Models and methods for resistance, sea-keeping and maneuverability of marine vehicles, high-speed, hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics of marine propellers and propeller-hull interaction, vibro-acoustic analysis of marine structures, interior and exterior hydrodynamic noise;- Experimental and numerical methods for the analysis of characteristics of superhydrophobic materials, relating to the reduction of resistance, noise and vibration.

The Sea Economy and service to industry

In addition to research activities, CNR-INM, through its test - In cooperation with the Navy, participates in national military facilities and simulation tools, plays a constant service for the research programs, and as part of the European defense technical and scientific support to the shipbuilding and system develops initiatives coordinated by the European boating industry, in order to place CNR at a central location in these areas, which are a crucial part of the “Sea Economy”. Partnership includes many prestigious national and international organizations and industries such as:

- the Italian Navy, the European Navies participating in EDA (European Defence Agency), and the Office of Naval Research (USA);- important national and international industries such as Fincantieri, Finmeccanica, Thyssen Krup, consortium Airbus, Cira, ESA (European Space Agency), Piaggio, Alenia Aermacchi, Riva Calzoni, Schaffran Propeller, Yamaha and others;- America’s Cup challengers (“Azzurra”, “Il Moro di Venezia”, all participations of “Luna Rossa”);- the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), for technical support in the training of Italian boats and crews for the Rowing and Kayak races of the Olympic Games.
