SS Red Oak Victory
The Red Oak Victory is a Victory-Boulder class cargo ship built in 1944 in the Richmond-Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California. She served in World War II as USS Red Oak Victory AK-235 carrying fleet ammunition in the Pacific Theater. After the war, she was returned to civilian service and sailed for another 24 years including supplying the US military effort in Korea and Vietnam. In 1969 she was retired to the Ready Reserve Fleet ("Mothball Fleet"). In 1998 it was recognized that Red Oak Victory was the last remaining ship of 747 vessels built at the Richmond-Kaiser Yards. She was conveyed by Congress to the Richmond Museum Association and serves today as a floating museum commemorating both the shipyard workers who built her and the sailors who served on board during her long career. In addition to regular tours of the ship, special events are held every year such as Pancake Breakfasts and Swing Dances. The ship is open to the public on Sundays, 10am- 4pm (3pm in the winter).
