The “BGP WORKSHOP” is an *introductory* course for BGP aimed at beginners, delivered by BGP experts.

Objectives of the day, prerequisites, and the context of “BGP in practice”.

Opening Session

What BGP is and why it is used?
Autonomous Systems (AS) and ASNs.
Customer–ISP relationships and the concepts of peering and transit.
Overview of core operating principles.

THEORY 1 – Fundamentals

Coffee Break.

BGP sessions (states and key parameters).
BGP messages (overview).
Main attributes.
Route selection process (best path).

THEORY 2 – Sessions, Attributes, and Best Path Selection.

Deployment and configuration concepts across common platforms.
Basic configuration and local prefix advertisement.
Default route / default originate.
Introduction to BGP for IPv6.
Verification and operational check commands.

THEORY 3 – Basic Configuration and Verification.

Lunch Break.

Why policies and filters are needed?
Prefix lists.
Route-map / route-policy / RPL (concepts and differences).
Introduction to filtering: logic and use cases.

THEORY 4 – Policies and Filtering Tools.

Prefix-based and community-based filtering (concepts and application).
Traffic engineering: Local Preference, AS_PATH prepending, MED, communities.
Overview of ISP architecture and Route Reflectors.
Introduction to security topics: RTBH, RPKI, and ROAs.

THEORY 5 – Advanced Policies, ISP Architectures, and Security.

Setup and verification of eBGP and iBGP sessions.
Prefix advertisement and propagation, including default originate.
Filtering with prefix lists and communities (applied through route-map/route-policy).
Traffic engineering with Local Preference, AS_PATH prepending, and MED.
Operational verification and troubleshooting (quick checks and common scenarios).

LAB (2 hours) – Guided Hands-on Exercises.
