Giardino della Villa Medicea di Castello

A perfect synthesis of art and technology, and one of the first historical examples of an artificial grotto, the ‘Grotta degli animali’ or ‘Grotta del Diluvio’ (Cave of the Animals or of the Flood) is one of the main artistic testimonies of the Villa di Castello Garden. Commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici for the enjoyment of the court, and designed by the architect and sculptor Niccolò Pericoli known as il Tribolo, together with other artists who worked on it during the first and second half of the 16th century, it has over the centuries fuelled the imagination of artists, travellers and writers, starting with Giorgio Vasari, who took part in its realisation. The guided tour will retrace the history of this water theatre to reveal its secrets and recount its role in the Villa di Castello Garden. To conclude, the recently restored water features will be opened. Sintesi perfetta di arte e tecnologia, tra i primi esempi storici di grotta artificiale, la "Grotta degli animali" o del Diluvio costituisce una delle testimonianze artistiche principali del Giardino della Villa di Castello. Voluta da Cosimo I de' Medici per il divertimento della corte, progettata dall'architetto e scultore Niccolò Pericoli detto il Tribolo, insieme ad altri artisti che vi hanno lavorato nel corso della prima e della seconda metà del Cinquecento, ha nel corso dei secoli alimentato l'immaginario di artisti, viaggiatori e letterati a partire da Giorgio Vasari che ha preso parte alla sua realizzazione. La visita guidata intende ripercorrere la storia di questo teatro delle acque per rivelarne i suoi segreti e raccontare il suo ruolo all'interno del Giardino della Villa di Castello. A conclusione apertura dei giochi d’acqua recentemente restaurati.
