A symposium showcasing the Green Skills 4 Cities project. International speakers presenting new perspectives on urban Naturebased solutions.

A symposium showcasing the final project’s outputs (Training for Trainers, “Long- term” and “Short-term programme” respectively), an overall educational programme for trainers, learners (Master’s/PhD students) from different backgrounds (architecture, botany, design, and business &amp; economy) and countries (Italy, Spain, and Austria), developed within the Green Skills 4 Cities EU-funded project. International invited speakers (Germany, Austria, and United Kingdom) will provide an overview of the new perspectives on urban Nature-based solutions with potentials and future goals for the new generation of professionals to be trained thanks to interdisciplinary resources available online. 

Round tables will allow the debated on the key topics of the symposium between private and public stakeholders to support the replication of interdisciplinary programme to support new generation of professionals.

The event will take place in Aula Benvenuto, Dipartimento di Architettura e Design, Università di Genoa, Stradone S. Agostino, 37, 16123 Genova (GE).

The term ‘Nature-based Solutions’ may only have been around since the late 2000s, but the theory and practice of conceptualising, designing of implementing them, has much deeper roots. This presentation will touch on key moments along a journey of endeavour and discovery extending back over 25 years — a journey through which the speaker has been constantly driven by a desire to provide creatively for urban biodiversity for the significant benefit of both humankind and many other species. This journey will be illustrated with project examples from the United Kingdom in which provision for native biodiversity has been a key driver of design. Some of the key successes and lessons learned will be described and the importance of well-monitored exemplar projects emphasised. The future of nature-based solutions will be discussed from the perspective the more holistic frameworks of Ecourbanism, Biophilic Design, Ecosystem Service Optimisation and Ecomimesis.
