The American University of Florence, supported by The Center for Italian Studies at Stony Brook University, proudly presents its 14th Annual Academic Conference: The Renaissance of Material Media in Photography, Film, and Beyond.Join scholars, artists, and makers in Florence on Friday, December 5, 2025 - from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., - to explore the vibrant comeback of analog, from film cameras and darkrooms to handwritten notebooks and sustainable material practices. Admission is free during the event.The program brings together researchers, practitioners, and industry voices to investigate how analog resurgence is reshaping production, education, infrastructure. The conference will also broaden its focus to address the environmental and sustainability challenges of analog materials and to examine related practices such as handwriting, sketchbooks, artisanal processes, and the tactile traces of human craft. Join us for panels, presentations, workshops, and conversations that map the material textures of contemporary visual culture.Coffee and lunch breaks will be provided by Apicius • International School of Hospitality.
