Festival of Europe Scotland
The purpose of the Festival of Europe Scotland is to foster mutual cooperation and understanding between Scotland and European countries especially through discussion and debate, promotion of the arts, culture and heritage, science and education; and to advance peace, human rights, rule of law, conflict resolution and reconciliation. It is centred on ‘Europe Day’, which is held on 9 May every year to celebrate peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman declaration’ that set out the idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, with the aim of making war between its nations unthinkable.
The idea for this festival was initiated by former Edinburgh MP Mark Lazarowicz, who has been active in a number of European organisations in Scotland for many years. Mark leads an organising committee who work with partners to offer a varied festival programme featuring speakers and workshops, cultural and creative activities, and information sharing events with the aim of offering something for everyone. Between them, the members of the committee have a wide range of experience in charities and European events.
