Venice is a beautiful and unique city although not easy to get acquainted with because of its particular urban texture made up of interweaving narrow walkways and water-filled canals. Join this walking tour to find out how the city really is, and works today, and to learn the stories of those who made it great, as we cross three of the six original districts - San Marco, San Polo with Rialto, and Castello.
After leaving San Marco square we cross one of the most modern areas of Venice, rebuilt in the 19th century, as we head to the Fenice Opera House. Admiring its neoclassical façade we'll tell you about a city where operas were one of the main attraction for centuries in Europe and a place that hosted some of the greatest composers and singers. Later, we extol the deeds of two famous Venetians, Antonio Vivaldi (as we cross the borough of Sant'Angelo where he directed the local theatre) and Giacomo Casanova (who was born in the parish of san Samuele). And now a modern Venetian of the present: Alberto Valese, a great artisan master in the making of marble paper and papier machè, his works to be seen in the window of his store steps away from the broad campo Santo Stefano the we'll pass through.
Yet it's time to cross the great and famous Grand Canal, using a gondola ferry, and mingle with the locals who use it on daily basis as a favourite mean of transportation. We are now in the San Polo district and, passing by the home of Carlo Goldoni, we'll share some words about the greatest play writer of the 18th century whose popular comedies are still on stage nowadays. A stroll through the former 'red light district' of Venice will be next, an area where we can talk about an activity better known as the 'oldest profession in the world' that made Venice famous all over Europe. Next, the Rialto area, part of it is the large bend of the Grand Canal, always busy with bystanders sitting in one of the bars and restaurants located just a few away from the main waterway of the city.
The Rialto bridge will take us across again the Grand Canal again in its most central part as we move now into the Castello district, the largest in Venice. Walking by the San Giovanni Crisostomo borough we'll have a short stop by the an old white stone arch, all thatís left of Marco Polo's house, and the perfect spot to praise his extraordinary journey to China in the 13th century. And now letís end the tour at a great gelato place where you can refresh yourself after the walk savouring one or two scoops of the delicious ice cream.
