Supertuscans
Overview
The term “Supertuscan” refers to a group of groundbreaking wines that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s, when visionary producers chose to step outside traditional DOC regulations of Tuscany.
Instead of relying solely on native grapes like Sangiovese and restrictive blending rules, these winemakers embraced international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc, or crafted 100% Sangiovese wines of exceptional quality.
Though originally labeled as simple “table wines,” many of these bottles quickly gained international acclaim and ultimately reshaped Italy’s wine laws.
This tasting will present a representative selection of Supertuscans, focussing mostly on mono-varietal expressions, as they offer a pure lens into each grape’s true identity.
These wines will be tasted:
1) Isole e Olena: Cepparello 1996 – 100% Sangiovese
2) Fontodi: Syrah 2015 – 100% Syrah
3) Le Macchiole: Paleo 2017 – 100% Cabernet Franc
4) Castellare di Castellina: Poggio ai Merli 2016 – 100% Merlot
5) Tenuta dell’Ornellaia: Ornellaia 2010 – Bordeaux-style blend
