Description

Many historians see the various elements of a developing Gothic style coming together for the first time with the 12 th-century renovations, led by Abbot Suger, of the Basilica of Saint-Denis, near Paris. It eventually became the royal burial place as well, with over 70 recumbent statues as effigies. But during the French Revolution in the 1790s, statues at the magnificent west entrance were destroyed, altar furnishings were melted down, and royal corpses were disinterred, then thrown into lime pits. This talk will explore Saint-Denis’s Gothic elements, royal necropolis, revolutionary iconoclasm, and current state of restoration. How does Abbot Suger’s ideal of transcendent grandeur, with church elements that “transported” him to a “higher world,” connect with patriarchal rulers, their tombs, and statues—eventually provoking violence that flipped the projections of good and evil?
