Politecnico di Milano and Milano Multiphysics are glad to announce the first summer school on "OpenFOAM for multiphysics modeling of Nuclear Reactors".

During the school, you will be guided through a full multi-physics modeling of a nuclear reactor. You will learn how to tailor the available OpenFOAM CFD solvers to the needs of nuclear reactor analysis, how to create new solvers for neutronics, and how to couple OpenFOAM to a Monte Carlo code like Serpent. The Summer School will include both frontal lectures and interactive tutorials.

At the end of the school, you will be able to independently develop and use modern tools for the multi-physics analysis of nuclear reactors, and to translate these competences into advanced applications for industry and research.

The school will be hosted at the Politecnico di Milano, Bovisa campus.

Before the school

Preparatory assignments will be send to students approximately 1 month before the summer school. Students are already encouraged to perform the standard OpenFOAM tutorials available at https://cfd.direct/openfoam/user-guide/tutorials/, and to familiarize with Serpent.

Registration

The registration deadline has been extended to August 6th, 2018. This will be the last extension.

The cost of the registration is 900 Euro (VAT included) and includes lectures, teaching material, lunches (Tuesday to Friday), coffee breaks and a social dinner.

Hurry up! In order to guarantee a high quality of the teaching and the tutoring, only a limited number of tickets are available.



Prerequisites

Participants are expected to possess a solid background in nuclear engineering. In addition, participants should be able to use OpenFOAM and Serpent at a basic level.

To be able to run the Serpent code during the tutorial sessions, participants should have their own Serpent license (additional information available at http://montecarlo.vtt.fi/ )

Location

The summer school will take place on Bovisa Campus of Politecnico di Milano.

Bovisa campus is well connected to any part of the city thanks to two suburban railway stations (Milano Bovisa Politecnico and Milano Villapizzone). Reaching Milan by plane:

  • from Malpensa airport: railway connection that leads directly to Central Station or to the Bovisa Campus. In addition, bus service from the airport to the Central Station of Milan, with a bus every 20 minutes.

  • Linate airport: bus connection to the city center. In addition, bus service from the airport to the Central Station of Milan, with a bus every 30 minutes.

  • from Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport: bus service from the airport to the Central Station of Milan, with a bus every 30 minutes.



Accommodation

A nearby (walking distance) guest-house offers rooms at the special rate of 60 Euro/night, or 30 Euro/night for a bed in a shared double room, from Monday to Friday.
