Event description
6K length hiking on the Berici hills, seeing historical and archaeological sites to conclude with a buffet lunch break with local wines.

About this Event

THE PROJECT

A short walk / hiking in the enchanting community of Mossano located at the foot of the Colli Berici hills (12Km south of Vicenza), seeing historical, archaeological and natural sites and concluding with a buffet refreshment down the valley next to the stream, tasting the food and wines of the local Agriturismo Da Sagraro.

The walk is about 6 km length, it has an easy difficulty level (difference in altitude of about 150 meters - 500 feet, path of dirt hill with some step climbing). It is suitable for children and families (but not strollers). Dogs on leash allowed too. The “teaching farm” activity is held by the Agriturismo/Winery owner and a local expert of the "Pro Loco di Mossano" for historical sites explanations and supported by an interpreter. In case of rain, the event will be canceled.

SCHEDULE

  •  9:00AM: meeting point at the parking lot in front of the Mossano Town Hall located right before the church in Piazza Municipio 1, 36020 Mossano (GPS@45.419809, 11.550704, or check the Google Street View). Check-in and possibility to get a coffee at the bar before to start walking.
  • 10:00AM: Visit to the prehistoric site of the Cave Grotta di San Bernardino (the group will be allowed to get inside the cave while it is usually closed to the public, read below more info about this site).
  • 11:15AM: Down to the Valle dei Mulini (Mills Valley) visiting the enchanting valley (read below more info about this site). The group will also admire the "prigioni" ruins, a preserved medieval village built in the rock.
  • 11:45AM: Break at the valley bottom next to the stream where one of the old mills was located; rest and relax tasting the wines and the sopressa salami produced by the local Da Sagraro Agriturismo, plus their cheese, pickles, cakes.
  • 12:45AM:—If the group wants it and the temperature allows us—visit inside the last mill, with the old millstone still working.
  • 2PM: Back to the parking lot. For those who wants, free time for a coffee at the bar or wine shopping at the Da Sagraro Winery (reachable by car in about 10mins).

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VISITED PLACES

Grotta di San Bernardino (Cave of Saint Bernardino): An archaeological site of European importance, the San Bernardino cave has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, by the Neanderthal man. The cave is now a didactical area with the cast of the prehistoric Italy's oldest fireplace and it allows to understand how the daily life of the first inhabitants of Berici hills was.

Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills): it is a beautiful tiny valley placed at the feet of the Mossano town. The local milling activity has characterized the Berici hills culture and economy since Middle Age. Some of this antiques mills are still visible, some have been fully restored. At the end of the valley it is possible to get inside of an ancient mill with the gears and the old millstones still working using just the energy of water. This step allow the visitors to catch the medieval tradition aspects and to understand the strong past rural tradition.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

Please bring appropriate hiking shoes! Some sections of the path are gravel and slippery.
