Making sense of sound is one of the hardest jobs we ask our brains to do. In a matter of milliseconds, the auditory system must encode pitch, timing, timbre, loudness and assign meaning to sound. More holistically, our hearing brain interacts with our emotions, thoughts, movements, and our other senses. We don’t just hear; we engage with sounds.
This important partnership between sound and the brain leaves a fundamental imprint on who we are as human beings.

In our research, the Frequency Following Response (FFR) elicited by speech and music, are used to study how the brain processes precise sound ingredients. Sound plays an unrecognized role in both healthy and hurting brains. Our findings show that musicians—defined here as anyone who has played an instrument regularly at any point in their lives—have measurably stronger sound processing for decades, speaking multiple languages has a beneficial influence on making sense of sound and athletes are better able to hear specific sounds in rooms full of noise. The FFR, also known as "speech-abr" has also shed biological light on patients with language disorders including autism, hearing loss, concussion, and the challenge of listening in noise. The sounds of our lives shape our brains, for better and for worse, and help us build the sonic world we live in.
FFR provides biological insights for assessment and treatment of auditory processing disorders in children. It can monitor the efficacy of APD and other therapies. The interpretation of FFR results for clinical purposes and referral will be discussed together with further clinical implications.
