Event description
An event dedicated to work-life-balance and gender equality in the visual arts sector // SECOND PART

About this event

The Embassies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in Italy, in collaboration with Circolo Scandinavo and EWMD Rome, are organizing the third event on work-life-balance and gender equality, now dedicated to the Visual Arts Sector. We aim to create a platform for exchange between Nordic and Italian art workers - artists, curators, journalists, and researchers – on how to achieve a more equal and diverse world of the visual arts.

The pandemic has forced most of us to change our lives in different ways. Now, when society slowly opens again in many countries, we believe that this could be the time to actively change our habits and norms to create more balance in work and in life.

The visual arts are at the same time a space for work and for life. If we consider visual art to be not only a representation but also a projection of our society, could a change towards a more equal and diverse art world have an impact on our society in general? How can we find a common language and develop an action plan to create more equal working conditions for visual artists regardless of gender and social status, and a more equal representation of gender and cultural diversity in the visual arts?

We wish to explore artists’ working conditions and sense of “work-life-balance”, especially when wanting to establish a family and have children. Are there any differences for female and male artists? Which tools are needed to enact sustainable changes in working conditions in the visual arts? With an interdisciplinary, intersectional, and inclusive perspective, would it be possible to better understand how to make this change? And in the end, would a more equal and diverse representation in the visual arts produce more interesting and exciting art works?

The second part of the event, on June 23, will be hosted at Circolo Scandinavo. Participants will work on a draft of a common action plan and Manifesto on how to go further together.

The event will take place at Circolo Scandinavo, Via della Lungara, 231, Rome.
