Path Of Rock Churches - Trekking tour
Far from urban centers, in the heart of the Murgia Park, the rocky plateau still preserves unexpected forests that have escaped deforestation and traces of art and devotion. This is a scenic and characteristic tour, a cultural visit different from the usual where nature, history and archaeology come together in a trekking route, overhanging the deep canyon of the Gravina. There are five rock-hewn churches that can be visited exclusively: starting with the Crypt of the Canary, the Church of St. Andrew, the Church of the Scaletta and the Church of the Madonna of the Loe, dating roughly between the 9th and 12th centuries. Following a path immersed in the Mediterranean maquis, through stairs carved into the rock, we finally reach Sant'Eustachio, a true hidden gem of the park, where despite the collapses frescoes dating back to the 16th century are still visible. Along the route, naturalistic beauties alternate with arcosolium tombs and burial chambers dating back to the 11th century b.C. A true journey through history to be enjoyed while respecting environmental sustainability, for greater protection, preservation and enhancement of the rocky environment of Matera. Trekking shoes or similar and good physical fitness required.
