Hey there September and hey there developer community. Our monthly meet-up is back and Abraham Mejia-Aguilar, Senior Researcher at the Center for Sensing Solutions – Eurac Research – is taking over.
This session is dedicated to methods based on machine learning and optical sensors to detect, identify, and classify some of the common diseases and pests introduced in a farming management system.
These methods could be of particular importance to mountain agriculture in the province of South Tyrol. In this most northern region of Italy, it is a vital social-economic activity cultivating apple orchards and vineyards. Growing on mountain terrain with its steep slopes, challenging accessibility, and extreme weather conditions, the plants are also exposed to a combination of biotic and abiotic stress that can result in diseases or pests’ attacks. It results in the loss of the yield and quality of products, economic losses, reducing food security with severe ecological impacts.
