LIVING LABS AND URBAN CULTURAL HERITAGE REGENERATION

Exploring the practices of ROCK - Regeneration and optimisation of Cultural heritage in creative and Knowledge cities.

Living Labs support cities in addressing social, economic and environmental challenges. They are sites to collaboratively design and test innovations, whether social or technical. They foster learning and experimentation between different urban actors. These laboratories are tailored to their local socio-cultural environments and link co-creative methods with new technologies to make cultural heritage a driving force for urban regeneration processes.

In ROCK, the creation of heritage communities is based on the setting of living labs in the three replicator cities (Bologna, Skopje and Lisbon) and benefit from the expertise of the role model cities (Lyon, Athens, Cluj-Napoca, Eindhoven, Turin, Vilnius and Liverpool).

During the workshop, we will discuss and compare the different approaches, and work in groups to identify recommendations on how to set up “the ideal living lab”.

Guiding questions for the workshop: What is a living lab? What does it do? To whom is it addressed? When is it needed to have a LL? What is the link between LL and urban centres/city agencies? How do they relate when it comes to urban regeneration processes?

  • Organising institutions: Eurocities, Urbasofia
  • Tutors: Cécile Houpert, project support officer at Eurocities; Miruna Draghia, urban planner at Urbasofia

The workshop is part of "EUROPEAN CITY AGENCIES NETWORK. A DISCUSSION ON CITIZENSHIP AND THE SPATIAL PLANNING PROCESS", the final conference of EUCANET - European Agencies Network for citizenship, inclusion, involvement and empowerment of communities through the urban transformation process. EUCANET is co-funded by the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Union
