9:00 - 9:15 - NOI Techpark - Opening

9:15 - 10:00 - UNIBZ - Alessandro Mosca - UNiCS: The open data platform for Research and Innovation

Research and Innovation (R&I) ecosystems involve data and knowledge flows across enterprises, academia, funding institutions, public authorities and citizens. Key R&I data are currently dispersed across a multitude of distinct, non-interoperable and heterogeneous datasets. Designing policies that affect R&I dynamics is a task which requires to overcome these limitations. The talk introduces UNiCS, the open platform for Research and Innovation data management powered by SIRIS Academic (Barcelona, Spain). The UNiCS platform follows the Virtual Knowledge Graph approach, which is meant to ease the access to a vast amount of heterogeneous data, offering the final users the means for formulating queries using the vocabulary from the knowledge domain they are experts in. In UNiCS, each query gets transformed in a set of optimised queries to different data sources, thanks to a core OBDA (ontology-based data access) engine called -ontop-. Together with a short introduction of the main components of the platform, a list of real application scenarios will be introduced, showing the main benefits of following the OBDA principles and methods in the case of R&I data management.

Truckscreenia offers in-road targeted advertisement, via large e-paper screens mounted on trucks. We will discuss some of the challenges we met such as

  • Developing remote controls and a Linux based operating software. Because a screen is not enough, one must feed information into it...
  • Heat dissipation: an unexpectedly stubborn overheating. The various road we tried, the solution we found
  • Integrating different knowledge sources and mathematical models into a viable targeting algorithm. From scientific paper lingo to Rev. Thomas Bayes (1702-1761), with a flavour of Internet.
