Many people may not know that the Ghetto of Venice represents one of the most important places in the city.

Informazioni sull'evento

That of the Jews is a long and tormented history, made of great sorrows and loss, of isolation and per-secutions. The bond between Venice and the Jews has to be searched in the most ancient centuries of our history. In a 16th century where Spain, France and UK (just to mention some examples) have already expelled the Jews from their territories, Venice represents a bulwark of hope for people that cannot find peace nor home. The city of Venice actually decides not to expel the Jews but to isolate them. This gesture, driven by clear economical interests and far from being connected to what we today call tolerance, in the Europe of those days surely represents a positive exception.

This is the reason why we could define the venetian ghetto as a place of paradoxes, suspended between tolerance(for the time) and discrimination. These interesting contradictions turn it into one of the most mysterious places (also because less touristy) of the city. If you want to dive into the Venice of the 16th century, if you want to know the dynamics of the ghetto, the rules that controlled and stressed the life of the Jewish communities in and out of it, if you want to dip in an area of the city which is full of charm and local quitness, our tour is the perfect solution for you.

We will take a relaxing walk through the three ghetti (old, new and newish) to the discovery not only of the history but also of the special architecture of the places. The tour will take place from 10 to 11:30 am.

The ticket will be sold directly on the spot before starting the tour. The meeting point is in Campo San Geremia everyday at 10am. Please, try to come a few minutes earlier!
