Our first stop is Lucca, easily identifiable and unique because of its historic walls that still today surround the city.
We will explore the historic center, famous for its countless churches, including but not limited to the Duomo and the famous cathedral of San Martino which contains the Lucca’s most precious relic, the Holy Face of Lucca or the Sacred Countenance.
Passing through the characteristic Piazza dell'Anfiteatro (site of the ancient Roman amphitheater), we will venture down Via Fillungo, the most famous street in Lucca. Via Fillungo is home to the Guinigi Tower easily recognizable in any panoramic shot of Lucca because of the tree growing on top of the tower.
There is free time for lunch. Keep an eye out in Lucca’s bakeries and pastry shops for the traditional Buccellato, baked loaf with raisins.
In the afternoon we will explore Pisa. The highlight is of course the Piazza dei Miracoli home to the Leaning Tower. Not to be overlooked are the other three Pisan Romanesque masterpieces in the piazza: the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery. You will have free time to visit the sites and take some pics with the tower.
As we continue our city walk, we will make a stop in Piazza Dei Cavalieri and stroll along the elegant banks of Arno river.
Typical and tradition things to taste in Pisa include Cecina. It is a thin savory pie made with chickpea flour, oil, salt and water. It can be eaten alone or inside focaccia bread.
