Growing the ‘languagetree’ – helping students manage complexity

Learning a language is like growing a tree,

it starts small, and soon grows more branches,

twigs and leaves. But as the ‘language tree’ gets bigger,

it can become less easy to manage.

So by the time students reach B1 and B2,

many feel overwhelmed by the proliferation of new lexis,

fixed phrases and more complex grammar.

How can we help learners both retain what they know,

and control this ever-increasing quantity of language?

Speak Say Talk Tell: Strategies and tasks

for developing resourceful speakers

in the B1 and B2 classroom

This presentation will focus on developing effective

speaking strategies in learners in different discourse

contexts. With reference to the

Cambridge Common Scale of Speaking, we will touch

upon themes such as active listening, turn-taking,

developing discourse, patterns, interaction,

spoken register and look at practical classroom tasks and

speaking activities that help develop different forms of

speaking competence in B1 and B2 learners.
